Driving the Transfăgărășan: 14 Tours Compared

14 reviewed

The road over the Făgăraș mountains is usually only open from July to October, and the day is mostly driving, which is rather the point. These 14 trips run it with a driver so you can watch the window: Bâlea Lake at the top, the Vidraru dam, and Poienari fortress with its 1,480 steps. Season notes and prices below.

“A full day but plenty of stops. Didn’t see bears as it was snowing and they were hiding. But just the snow covered trees and buildings was enough for an Aussie. Lots of memorable and funny moments. Our guide George was an excellent driver and nothing was too much for him. A top day out.”

“What an amazing day trip!! We were picked up by Sergiu and he took us to some very spectacular scenery. We were very luck to have seen a bear and his baby. The only downside to it was the long drive... about 4 hrs to arrive to transfagarasan road however we had a few nice stops along the way.”

“We got from this tour much more than we ever expected to get. We thought in the beginning that it will be a group tour but we got a private tour just for the two of us. Bogdan was an excellent guide and drove with us 400 km in 13 hours, showing us monasteries, transilvanian villages, the Transfagarasan road, Balea lake, Vidraru lake, Poienari Fortress, Curtea de Arges and even a roman site after the time of closing. He puts so much soul in what he does and is so full hearted in his story telling. We talked about everything, he shared so much of history knowledge and made us…”

“Amazing trip from start to finish. Our guide was Alin, who immediately made us welcome and was really friendly. He had a really good knowledge of the history of each area we passed through. We had plenty of options to stop for breaks or coffee etc, nothing was too much trouble. First stop was a fortress which was amazing and then on upwards to the mountain. The views from the top of the Mountain down the Transfagarasan highway were stunning and we were given ample time to wander about taking pictures and sampling the local snacks on offer at Lacul Balea. He recommended Langos which we tried and it was…”

“This tour wasn’t part of our original plan, but with almost everything closed in Bucharest for Easter, we decided to book it last minute – and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. The nature was absolutely stunning, and spotting the bears was an unforgettable experience! Even though the Poenari Fortress was closed, our guide adjusted the route, taking us into the mountains instead, where we enjoyed some beautiful views. It felt like a real adventure, and we came back with amazing photos and memories.”

“awful experience. I booked 2 says prior to going. the guide that showed up was not the guide who was booked and messaged the group. he smelled bad, drove 90mph in a 60 zone with one of the seatbelt broken, he was rude and didn't try to give us a good experience. he messaged us all day before staying we won't see bears..yet that's what advertised. he didn't show/till us where we were or answer any questions.. he just snapped the entire time..apparently his name was Sebastian.. we don't think it was. I want a refund!”

From Brașov to Transfăgărășan Highway, Bâlea Lake by cable car, and Carta Monastery, in a small group with hotel pickup.

“A really enjoyable day out. Trian was very knowledgeable - precise heights of mountains, dates, names, etc, all came tripping off memory. This being winter, the tour was not the full length of the highway and I knew that would be the case before we set out. I had expected we would be able to do more of the highway before moving into a cable car, but that was my mistake, so no stars deducted for that. But just as a note to others keen for the drive - book in summer! Still worth the day out, though, and I have some amazing snowy mountain photos. Strangely, I really enjoyed…”
